Personal Wellness
One of the reasons over-the-counter medications are so popular is because people are looking for quick relief of their symptoms. Yes, a headache can get in the way of doing your work, or having fun; and an aching back or neck can be equally distressing, especially if it lingers day after day. A little pill that makes it all feel better and gets us through the day is the upside of it all.
On the downside, symptoms are usually a sign of something going on that the body can't deal with on it's own. Symptoms are a warning signal, telling us that there's a problem.
It's human nature to want relief, and to want it quickly. But, it is the nature of healing to seek the cause of the symptoms. Today's symptoms can be tomorrow's disease or illness. Relieving symptoms does not stop the process which is underway, it simply postpones our ability to be aware of it.
If you have chronic symptoms (persistent for more than a week, and recurring after temporary relief from an over-the-counter medication or other self care measure), then it is time to seek out the cause. Most people go to their medical doctor, many seek out alternative care. Whichever you choose, make sure that your provider is actively working with you to find the cause not just to reduce the symptoms to a tolerable level. Seek whatever is available to help you at all levels of your being. Be willing to explore new ways. Be open to the possibility of permanent change.
During my 17 years of practice, I have worked with many individuals who wonder why they didn't discover the benefits of bodywork sooner. As they become educated in what causes physical pain and discomfort, they also learn a lot about their own body. They learn how to "tune in" to their body and it's many signals. They learn how the body works and how the different systems of the body are connected. Knowledge takes away the fear of the unknown. The more you know about your body, the more you can own your ability to take care of it. Not sure if bodywork is for you? Schedule a consultation and find out for yourself if you agree with what you learn. Your health is your responsibility, make it worth your time to reach the highest level you can attain.
